long-term music meme
Give me a list of 10 albums you've had for at least 10 years, which you still listen to today (yes THE WHOLE THING) when you need to.

You are limited to one album per band. (But um crossover between musicians is okay. Because my list has that.)

1. The Beatles, Abbey Road
2. Roger Waters, The Pros And Cons of Hitchhiking
3. They Might Be Giants, Apollo 18
4. The Pixies, Doolittle
5. The Breeders, Pod
6. Belly, King
7. The Melvins, Stag
8. Frank Black, Teenager Of The Year
9. PJ Harvey, Rid Of Me
10. Tori Amos, Under The Pink

And though this doesn't belong on the list, of course, the new Mates of State record is fucking bliss. It's like a blowjob in a hot tub given by an angel, times ten.

I can't get to ten

U2, "Achtung Baby"
Live, "Throwing Copper"
The Cranberries, "No Need To Argue"
Dire Straits, "Making Movies"
Rancid, "And Out Come The Wolves"
Alice in Chains, "Alice in Chains"
Offspring, "Smash"
Pearl Jam, "Ten"

... that's all I could come up with. I'm not ashamed of any of them, but I'm not proud of the list either. 10 years ago I was still buying music on tapes, most of which I didn't re-acquire after switching to CD/MP3. Plus, even among the stuff I *did* re-obtain later, I hardly listen to any of the albums I did before/during college. 2000 was when my musical tastes really broadened.

I didn't expect many people would be able to get to ten. I didn't expect many people would still listen to full albums.

I listen to them in MP3 format, of course, but I still listen to a ton of full albums. Floyd, Jefferson Airplane, VU/Reed solo, GNR, RHCP all come to mind. Also, the hedwig soundtrack disc.

A lot of the albums from above, I enjoy for entirely different reasons now than 10 years ago. I used to hate side B of "Throwing Copper", but now I think it's the best part. Half of the Rancid songs didn't make sense to me back then, but now that I live in their backyard, it's cool hearing places I know (and go).

wow. over 10 years? i'll listen to singles but i don't think i actually listen to any full albums currently that are over 10 years old. i think, if i did my list would look like this, though... in no particular order:
beck - mellow gold
frank black - teenager of the year (man, i totally feel you on this one)
radiohead - pablo honey/the bends (both of these albums were fucking perfect)
dinosaur jr - without a sound
smashing pumpkins - siamese dream
violent femmes - add it up (best best of cd ever)
bad religion - stranger than fiction
weezer - pinkerton
morcheeba - who can you trust?
jawbreaker - 24 hour revenge therapy

honorable mention:
brad - interiors
breeders - last splash
ben folds five - ben folds five
elastica - elastica
various - kiss my ass/if i were a carpenter/schoolhouse rock rocks/stone free
frente - marvin the album
grant lee buffalo - mighty joe moon
jeff buckley - grace
soundtrack - singles/clerks
world party - bang!

i suppose it's kinda fitting that all of these are from after 1990. i really was a child of the 90's music and i never felt the love or inspiration from earlier musical offerings.

I could have also listed Pinkerton, Add It Up and Pablo Honey. I don't know The Bends as well as I should.

I put on Last Splash and Elastica recently and was kind of bored - I felt like, if these chicks didn't have really sexy voices there'd be almost nothing here for me.

Rid Of Me is definitely the PJ record i listen to the most still, because of the amazing Albini sounds of the drums and distortion, but I do also love To Bring You My Love. That was more something I listened to every week during a bad time in college.

With Tori, I still listen to ALL her records - I seriously debated putting Pink or Pele - but I guess I picked Pink because it's the first one I ever heard and it still retains that mystical quality.

Also EXCELLENT call on If I Were A Carpenter, that record is DOPE.

also, i always felt more for pj harvey's to bring you my love and tori amos's little earthquakes. i think she did a cover of crash test dummie's superman song on the little earthquakes single that was just amazing.

In no particular order:

1. Radiohead - The Bends
2. Pearl Jam - Ten
3. Fiona Apple - Criminal
4. Natalie Merchant - Ophelia
5. Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West
6. Tool - Aenima

Greatest hits by:
7. CCR
8. Joni Mitchell
9. Janis Joplin
10. Garth Brooks

...Schizophrenic, I guess.

I can never get through all Aenima anymore. I go there for a few songs and then I'm done. I had a hard time getting staying that angry back in the day. I still love "Eulogy" and "Hooker With A Penis" but the rest really bores me compared to Lateralus and the first half of 10,000 Days.

I listened to that CCR Greatest Hits CD non stop for years - then someone gave me the box set and I started their proper albums. There is a lot of filler, like "Oobie Doobie", and many other songs that sound exactly like "Oobie Doobie", but there's also a lot of lost gems like "Effigy", "Ramble Tamble", and "Born To Move".

Crap like Oobie Doobie is from when they first got signed to Fantasy under the name Golliwogs. When Fantasy went through ownership change and the name changed to CCR. John had started doing a lot more of the song writing and quality improved significantly as they stopped trying to match brit pop bands.

I've got a couple of standard albums from bands like CCR, Steppenwolf and the Stones, that I listen to frequently. They're mostly Greatest Hits albums, so I left them off my list as they never really seem like real albums.

Nope, "Ooby Dooby" (i misspelled it! how could I?) is from Cosmo's Factory, in between "Travelin' Band" and "Lookin' Out My Back Door", both classics. The Golliwogs record wasn't really blues-based. I think I listened to it once.

Holy shit, you're right. I could have sworn that was a Golliwog song. I hate that song, but I love so much else that Creedence did.

Yeah, I struggled with whether or not to put those on my list. But (and this is particularly with Otis Redding) in my experience, some hits albums are better than others and take a bit of crafting themselves.

Of course, when we're talking about listening to an entire album in its entirety, I think nowadays there are only a few bands that can pull off storytelling in an album format.

Confession: I have never listened to a Stones album. I love individual tracks, but haven't ever even heard a greatest hits album, let alone the real mccoy. (I know, I know). I vow to change this folly immediately.

I can't ever get enough Tool. I could listen to every one of their albums straight through in succession. I'm not sure if it's because I put them away for so long or what. But yeah, Lateralus is incredible and definitely far superior.

I'll have to check out the box set. CCR is one of those bands that was beaten into me as a young child, so I'm sure I'd enjoy anything they've done.

I've never heard Pere Ubu, but Eric Drew Feldman played bass and keyboards on that Frank Black album Sean and I love, so I would probably dig it.

I also love The Clash's first record and American Beauty, but I didn't get them till a few years ago.

Any of the first four Zep records and any Pink Floyd record from the 70's could also have been on my list. It's probably Animals I put on the most now.

I'm not proud of my PF fandom, which is why it's down at 10, but if we were rating "bits and snatches of albums that play in my head unbidden by any conscious whim or external stimuli", Wish You Were Here is definitely No.1. My subconscious mind thinks it's the greatest album evah.

Just last week, for a birthday party, I put together a cd of songs I was listening to a lot when I was 15. What amazes me is how much I like all this stuff I was listening to back then. The only thing that's missing from iTunes now is all my old REM, which I think I'd like to reaquire.

They Might Be Giants: "Lincoln"
Cracker: "Cracker"
The Sea and Cake: "The Fawn"
Built to Spill: "There's Nothing Wrong With Love"
Pavement: "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain"
Soul Coughing: "Ruby Vroom"
Weezer: (blue album)
Neutral Milk Hotel: "On Avery Island"
Yo La Tengo: "Electr-O-Pura"
DJ Shadow: "Endtroducing..."

Yeah I've been rediscovering the R.E.M. It's GREAT. The one I think is my favorite now is New Adventures in Hi-Fi, which I thought was really lacking when it came out.

You get props for Lincoln. I think Lincoln probably has the cleverest lyrics of any of their records, and some of the craziest experimentation. It's never easy choosing a favorite TMBG. Apollo 18 usually ends up as mine just because I love singing along to the whole thing. And Fingertips. Fingertips is unbelievably brilliant.

  2. Johnny Cash, At Folsom Prison and San Quentin
  3. Pink Floyd, The Wall
  4. Soundgarden, Superunknown
  5. Neil Young, Harvest Moon
  6. Stone Temple Pilots, Core
  7. Queen, It's A Kind of Magic
  8. Some Random No Name Greatest Hits Mozart Album
  9. Black Sabbath, Mob Rules
  10. Black Sabbath, We Sold Our Soul For Rock N Roll

Black Sabbath is on their twice because they weren't really the same band for those two albums.

And Justice For All could have gone on my list too. I listened to The Wall 8000 times in high school but I don't make it through much any more because it seems like a weird compromise of Animals and The Final Cut - I just pick which mood I'm in and go for one of those.

The Wall never gets old for me. Roger Waters Radio KAOS would have been on there too, but I only recently repurchased it after loosing the album some time in 1991 or 92.
